Subdivision reveals ancient rua

A subdivision in Katikati is giving archaeologists and iwi a window into Maori life in the Eastern Bay of Plenty over the past 500 years.
Brigid Gallagher from Mishmish Heritage says her team is finding extensive signs of gardening and rua for storage of kuumara and potatoes on the Summerset By The Sea site.
She says the developers are complying fully with Historic places Trust rules about such sites.
Katikati kaumatua Paeahi Wanakore says the work confirms iwi stories about previous occupation.
During the first stage of the development five years ago, archaeologists found two settlement or housing areas by the foreshore.
