Gate closed on Taranaki initiative

Taranaki iwi health collective Te Whare Punanga Korero has slammed Corrections’ decision to scrap a re-integration service for prisoners.
Chairperson Darryn Ratana says since the New Plymouth Prison closed, the collective has worked with the department on proposals for a reintegration facility or service that would integrate with the whanau ora model of care.
Those plans have now been scrapped in favour of the new Out of Gate initiative, which Mr Ratana says is a national one size fits all programme which is driven by cost rather than effectiveness.
He says there was no consultation on the change, and Corrections is missing the chance to break the cycle and address the intergenerational issues around offending.
