Labour changes boost Maori voice
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall is welcoming a change that allows Labour’s Kaunihera Maori to construct a tangata whenua list as part of the party’s election process.
Ms Wall says the election of Hauraki-Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta as the party’s Maori vice president will help bed in the change.
She says Labour is waking up to the special standing and role of Maori in the party.
" The tangata whenua chapter and the recognition of Te Tiriti O Waitangi is right up front if you look at our new platform document. Which really is the spine that all of our manifesto is going to derive from and so we've taken our rightful place and the acknowlegement of the contribution that we are making to New Zealand society you know was very important " she says.
Louisa Wall says Labour’s leadership team ended its Christchurch conference by calling on Ngai Tahu in a sign of its commitment to work with iwi.
