The Labour party has elected Hauraki-Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta its Maori vice-president.
She overwhelmingly won the role that had previously been held by the late Parekura Horomia despite the party’s kaunihera Maori endorsing Northland’s Rudy Taylor.
Members did support a Kaunihera Maori remit calling for a strategy and timetable for making te reo Maori lessons compulsory in schools.
There was also a call from party president Moira Coatsworth for Labour to win back the four Maori seats it does not hold.
