No help for Maori in spectrum carve-up
Labour’s Maori and economic development spokesperson is describing the auction of 700 megahertz spectrum as an exercise in crony capitalism.
Vodafone and Telecom each paid $66 million for pairs of 15 megahertz blocks, which they will use to develop the next generation of mobile phone networks.
Two Degrees, which has a minority Maori shareholder, could only afford a pair of 10 megahertz blocks for $44 million.
Shane Jones says the refusal by the Government to set aside some spectrum for Maori represents a missed opportunity.
"I think it’s disappointing. I think they’ve missed an opportunity to propel a section of our people forward on the new information highway. The minister, Amy Adams, is not only sour in disposition but she has a very sour attitude towards Maori things and she’s supported by Steven Joyce who, unless you are a Chorus shareholder, they are not going to cut you any slack," he says.
Mr Jones says the allocation process ignored deep seated competition problems in the sector.
