Dairies targeted as tobacco pushers

Maori anti-smoking advocates are today looking at ways to cut down the temptation from the killer weed.
Te Ara Ha Ora National Maori Tobacco Control Leadership Service and Tomorrow Cancer Society Auckland are hosting an international forum on reducing tobacco supply.
Spokesperson Zoe Hawke says corner dairies in Maori communities seem jam packed with cigarettes
She says limiting the number of neighbourhood diaries selling tobacco, coupled with cessation support, is a way to create community environments that support whanau to quit smoking.
She says surveys have found the majority of people would support few cigarette outlets.
Focusing on tobacco supply is seen as a key step to meeting New Zealand’s goal of being smokefree by 2025.
