Auton to grow Ngapuhi wealth
Ngapuhi has appointed one of its own to head what it hopes will be its commercial powerhouse.
Leigh Auton, the former chief executive of Manukau City Council, will replace Sir John Goulter in December as chair of Ngapuhi Asset Holding Company.
Sir John will continue to chair the tribe’s deepwater fishing joint venture.
Mr Auton has served on the board for five years. He is a director of Auckland Council Property Ltd and chairs mental health service provider Recovery Solutions Trust and subsidiaries. He also consults on local government issues.
Ngapuhi this year reported a net profit of $6.7 million and growth in assets from $34 million to $50 million.
However, the much of this year’s profits came from a bonuys share issue from the tax credits arising from a bonus issue of Aotearoa Fisheries shares, and reimbursement for the costs of setting up Tuhoronuku, the body which will negotiate Ngapuhi’s historic treaty claim settlement.
