Early Goldie portrait for auction

Charles Frederick Goldie’s first Maori portrait goes up for auction next month, with the auctioneer hoping it can break the million dollar mark.
Kawhena, a chief of Ngati Mahuta, was painted in 1892.
Richard Thomson, the director of the International Art Centre in Auckland, says while Goldie often produced several versions of the same painting, Kawhena was only painted once.
The record auction price for a Goldie is the $573,000 paid for one of the painter’s later works, a portrait of Rutene Te Uamairangi of Taupo which had been owned by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
