The Maori Internet Society is asking for protection of Maori interests when new rules for .nz are applied.
Internet NZ subsidiary The Domain Name Commissioner wants to allow names to be registered with just .nz, doing away with the need for .iwi, .maori or the 12 other current suffixes.
Society spokesperson Karaitiana Taiuru says those suffixes can still be used, but they’re not likely to be first choice for new registrations.
A new option of .kiwi will also be introduced.
The commisssioner will hold public consultations on the plans next year.
Mr Karaitiana says any new domain name changes in Aotearoa New Zealand usually spark widespread cyber squatting and offensive name registrations, so Maori organisations need to be aware of what is happening and invoke dispute resolution processes if they feel their interests are affected.
