Putea found to restore Tawhiao’s Cottage

The Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board has set aside $40,000 to complete restoration of a cottage that was the former home of Tawhiao, the second Maori king.
The building will be leased to the Mangere Mountain Education Trust to use for classes and tours.
Auckland Council community facilities manager Brya Taylor says funding for the project, which has been going since 2010, has also come from the Mangere Gateway project and from a $60,000 anonymous donation.
The council will pay for the ongoing management and maintenance of the cottage, which is expected to be about $20,000 a year.
