Emotions high for Manu Korero


There was high emotion in Hamilton last night when the winners of the Nga Manu Korero national secondary schools speech competition were announced.
The Pei Te Hurinui Jones Trophy for senior Maori went to Raniera Blake from Tu Toa Tai Wananga in Palmerston North.
Raniera, who is the son of former Te Aute principal Piripi Blake and the late Tiwha Blake, also won the Riki Ellison Trophy for best make speaker.
Another Manawatu winner was Sonny Maaka Ngatai, who won the Korimako Trophy for senior English.
Matawhaiti Nepe-Pohatu of Huntly’s Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga was first in the junior Maori section.
Hinemaia Takurua attends Kuranui – a Kura Kaupapa Maori situated on the grounds of Tolaga Bay Area School
The E Tipu e Rea Award for highest aggregate English and Maori marks went to Te Whare Kotua-Davis of Naenae College, and the junior English speechmaking prize went to Karena Cribb from Tamatea High School.
