Parihaka prophets shown to world

A Maori filmmaker says the story of Parihaka is one he wanted to tell the world.
Paora Joseph has been invited to screen his feature-length documentary Tatarakihi: the Children of Parihaka at the month at the Rencontres Internationales Due Cinema Des Antipodes festival in St Tropez, France next month.
The film follows a group of children from the historic Taranaki settlement on a journey to the South Island to see the places their ancestors were imprisoned in the 1880s for their opposition to colonisation and land confiscation.
Mr Joseph went to Parihaka because he wanted to understand more abut the place and its prophets, and he saw an important story unfolding.
"Obviously because of Ghandi and others, I put Te Whiti and Tohu in that stead. I've always been inspired by prophets and we've got two prophets in our own country who aspire those teachings amongst their people so I think its an important story to tell on a wordly level as well as within our own country ", he says
Paora Joseph, who is a a clinical psychologist when he’s not making films, is now working on a feature about iwi claims.
