Ngai Tahu money in Kahungunu water scheme
Ngati Kahungunu Inc doesn’t want it, but Ngai Tahu says it will put up some of the cash needed to build the controversial Ruataniwha Water Storage Scheme in the central Hawkes Bay.
Ngai Tahu Holdings Corporation and power company TrustPower have each signed a memorandum of understanding with Hawke's Bay Regional Investment Company, which is the lead agency in the project to generate electricity, protect minimum flow levels on the Tukituki River and irrigate up to 30,000ha.
Kahungunu chair Ngahiwi Tomoana says he has discussed the investment with Ngai Tahu leader Sir Mark Solomon and expects the South Island iwi to tackle any potential negative effects of the scheme.
A board of inquiry is assessing whether the project can go ahead.
