Cup video celebrates Maori contribution

There’s one win to go before Team New Zealand brings the America’s Cup back to Auckland, and the celebrations will have a distinctly Maori face.
Oracle Team USA won the first race today after fending off a vigorous challenge at the start, and the second race was postponed because of high winds in San Francisco Harbour.
Worldwide attention in the sport has been boosted by the television graphics developed by Dunedin-based Animation Research, which has been working on the cup since 1992.
Chief executive Ian Taylor from Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Kahu says to add to the excitement his team has knocked up a free video, Kia Kaha San Francisco, which puts a Maori twist to the tale.
"We talk about the design of this waka, Aotearoa, the AC72, but our ancestors were among the world's leading designers, the world's leading sailors, navigators, they were sharp and they had to be. They populated a third of the planet in those wooden waka, so we've made this video that ties Maui and Aoraki, the North Island and the South Island together, to make this AC72, and the response to the video around the world has been absolutely phenomenal," he says.
A second video is waiting for release when Team New Zealand lifts the America’s Cup, which hopefully will be tomorrow morning.
