New Zealander of the Year calling for Maori health solutions

New Zealander of the year Dame Anne Salmond says a change of heart is needed to bring Aotearoa back to a state of balance.
Professor Salmond spoke yesterday to the Public Heath Association conference in New Plymouth about her studies into the notion of 'ora'.
She says an examination of old letters and manuscripts indicate it referred to a deeper condition than just health or well being, and it could apply to people, families, communities, ecosytems and rivers, they could also be 'mate', and there is now a challenge of turning things from 'mate to ora'.
"We probably have to change some of the ruling philosophies in this country. A change of mind, a change of heart to understand that relationships amongst people and between people and the other life forms that we exist with. That we need to bring those back to a state of balance they've just become incredibly unbalanced, unequalled, dysfunctional and in some cases really very ill," says Dame Anne Salmond.
