Kahungunu looks to boost farm profits

Ngati Kahunungu chair Ngahiwi Tomoana says the Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa iwi wants to develop its own export strategy.
He says Maori farmers would be better off by supplying directly to the market and retaining all the earnings in the supply chain rather than waving goodbye to the animals and the profits at the farm gate
He says the creation of a Maori brand would allow them to tell their unique story and history in the Asia-Pacific region.
The strategy would also include training Maori farm managers and addressing agriscience, finance, logistics, economics and marketing.
Mr Tomoana says Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Inc’s purchase of Tautane Farm was part of the strategy.
It is inviting Kahungunu farmers, landowers and others to a Kahungunu farming conference at Takitimu Marae in Wairoa on October 10.
