Fox pinning hopes on Team Wairoa
Veteran broadcaster Derek Fox says he’s looking forward to the chance to become mayor of Wairoa again.
He’s standing against incumbent Les Probert, who ousted him 12 years ago, and two other candidates.
He says he was asked to run by locals concerned there wasn’t enough Maori representation, so he convinced them to put up a ticket.
Mr Fox says his four-person Team Wairoa ticket could end up with a majority on the council, because of Wairoa’s unique make up.
"It’s the only local government district in the country where there are a majority of Maori. My thesis has always been if you choose the right candidates, people who the voters can look at and say this is someone who has done good work in the community, can be good in a governance role, then people would vote," he says.
Mr Fox says issues include a feeling the district is stagnating, and a fear it could become swallowed up in the Hawkes Bay local government area.
