Ta moko evolution tattooed on Atamira

Atamira Maori in the City opens tomorrow at The Cloud and Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront, offering three days of the Maori ABC . . . arts, business and culture, as well as a lot of whanaungatanga.
Graeme Tipene, the arts coordinator for the free event, says visitors can see the best of carving, weaving, sculpture and traditional and contemporary jewellery.
It will also be a chance to see how ta moko is evolving, and many visitors will come away with a permanent memory.
"When I first got into moko, my idols were people like Derek Llardelli, Mark Kopua, Gordon Hadfield. Now we're seeing a whole bunch of guys getting into moko that are changing everything, using things like Japanese colouring in traditional moko and giving it a boost. It's evolving from something that was beautiful into something that is amazingly beautiful," Mr Tipene says.
