Tainui hooks up with Sealord

Tainui has asked Sealord Group to catch its deepwater quota.
Tainui Group Holdings chief executive Mike Pohio says the change was sparked by the anticipated removal of foreign charter vessels from the deepwater fishery.
Waikato Tainui Fisheries doesn’t own any fishing boats, so in the past it has leased its quota into the market through an agent, along with Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Maniapoto.
The three iwi recently signed a long term lease agreement with Aotearoa Fisheries to catch their inshore quota. While all iwi own shares in Aotearoa Fisheries, which owns half of Sealord, many iwi choose to work with industry competitors to catch their own settlement quota.
