Spontaneity rules at Atamira hui
The director of Atamira Maori in the City is looking forward to the unexpected at this weekend’s celebration of Maori culture and development.
Alec Hawke says Ngati Whatua o Orakei is pleased Waterfront Auckland has made available The Cloud and Shed 10 for the biennial festival.
As well as workshops, seminars, kapa haka and music and dance showcases, there will be dozens of stalls where Maori artists and craftspeople show their work.
Mr Hawke says a lot of work has been put into the production, but he loves the spontaneity when Maori get together.
"I know that it happens at other festivals around the country, the Ngapuhi Festival, Matatini, and it's really good to get that sort of atmosphere going downtown in Auckland, the biggest city of our country," he says.
Atamira Maori in the City starts on Friday with lots of programmes aimed at schools, and goes through to Sunday.
Radio Waatea is broadcasting the event live on Saturday & Sunday from 10am until 4pm.
