Crown keen to finalise Northland settlement
The Crown expects to finalise a settlement with northernmost iwi Ngati Kuri in the next few weeks.
The Crown Law Office has told the Waitangi Tribunal negotiations are continuing with the iwi, but the Crown expects to introduce an omnibus bill in late October that will give effect to the settlements with Ngati Kuri, Ngai Takoto, Te Aupouri and Te Rarawa.
It has decided to proceed without waiting to settle with the fifth Muriwhenua iwi, Ngati Kahu, which has asked the tribunal to order the Crown to hand over various properties.
Te Rarawa has also lodged a remedies application with the tribunal, which is designed to block what it sees as a land grab by Ngati Kahu.
