Bigger putea for Rena monitoring
The Government is tipping another half million dollars into restoring the environmental damage from the Rena grounding.
Environment Minister Amy Adams says the $542,000 takes the government’s total investment in the Rena recovery plan to $2.42 million.
It will be spent on monitoring the quality of water and kaimoana, restoring shorelines, protecting wildlife and assessing the mauri of the Bay of Plenty area.
It’s almost two years since the cargo ship grounded on Astrolabe Reef on the approach to Tauranga Harbour, fouling beaches for hundreds of kilometres with oil and flotsam.
Independent MP Brendan Horan is claiming credit for the move because of his questioning the Government in the House about its lack of scientific monitoring.
He says it’s a step forward that the Government is now talking about collaboration with community, iwi, and businesses about the environmental impact.
