Big push to plant river bank at Huntly
Expect to see lots of Huntly whānau out on the banks of the Waikato River planting trees next week.
Kevin Hutchinson from Waikato RiverCare says the Rāhui Pōkeka A project is the biggest planting the charity has done in its 12 years of work on the river, and it is one of the best and most efficient ways to improve biodiversity. The Waikato River Authority is funding the $60,000 plant-up of more than 11,400 native trees and shrubs in the kilometre between the southern boundary of Huntly and the Waikato District Council water treatment plant.
Authority co-chair Tukoroirangi Morgan says it’s a good example of the collaborative work going on in the region to help protect the health of its waterways.
