Waikato River plan highlight of Koroneihana

The annual week-long Koroneihana hui wound up this morning with a breakfast commemorating the second Māori king, Tawhiao.
The king’s representative, Tukoroirangi Morgan, says it was a great week for the Kingitanga.
Highlights included the performance of Whatumoana Paki, who stood in for his father King Tuheitia at many events, a national discussion on water that allowed the New Zealand Māori Council and the Iwi Leaders Group to exchange views and update the motu, and the launch of an environmental management plan for the Waikato River.
Mr Morgan says the aim of the 269-page document 'Tai Tumu, Tai Pari, Tai Ao' was to restore the Waikato River to the same quality it was in at the time of the King Tawhiao.
He challenged councils along the river to make the plan binding, so it goes beyond a consultation document.
The plan has taken five years to develop.
