Vikings share fish tips with Māori
Lessons from the Iceland fisheries are being offered to Māori as a way to transform the industry.
Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust, which is funded from the Māori fisheries settlement to promote Māori education and economic development, is bringing Icelandic academic Ögmundur Knútsson to address its annual conference in Waitangi next week.
Chair Richard Jefferies says since 1990 the island nation has wrestled with how best to manage its north Atlantic fishery.
He says Māori fishing industry leaders visited Iceland in May, and saw potential for New Zealand in the model they saw there.
