Nanaia Mahuta says she’s supporting David Cunliffe over Shane Jones to lead the Labour Party.

The Hauraki-Waikato MP stood on a ticket to be Mr Cunliffe’s deputy in the 2011 caucus contest that gave David Shearer the top job and Grant Robertson the number 2 spot.

She says as a result of that loss she got involved in the organisational review which came up with the new system giving party members and union affiliates a say in who gets to be leader.

Ms Mahuta says it should deliver the best person.

"I've supported David Cunliffe because he's ready now, he'll be able to take it to John Key out on the streets and in the boardroom, and I've been unequivocal about my support. It's probably Shane and Grant who have changed who they support. Now they’ve got to back themselves," she says.
