Post-op exercise heart-felt desire

The recipient of this year’s Heart Foundation Māori cardiovascular research fellowship want to find ways to encourage Māori to take better care of their hearts once they have had surgery.
Geoff Kira from Massey University says only about 20 percent of people choose to undergo cardiac rehabilitation after having their operation.
For Māori the percentage is even lower.
For the three-year study, Dr Kira will work with MidCentral District Health Board cardiology services and Manawhenua Hauora, which services Māori in the Manawatu and Whanganui areas.
He says past efforts have been about revamping strategies which haven’t worked, so he is looking for completely new approaches.
