Appeal lodged for Teina Pora
Lawyers for Teina Pora have lodged an application with the Privy Council to appeal his conviction for the 1992 rape and murder of South Auckland woman Susan Burdett.
Pora has spent 21 years in jail for the crime, despite the subsequent conviction of lone wolf serial rapist Malcolm Rewa for her rape.
The Māori Party has cited Pora as an example of the institutional racism in the justice system that can lead to young Maori being convicted on inconclusive evidence and false confessions.
The Police Association has also revealed senior officers involved in the case now have doubts about the conviction.
