Ngāti Whatua ō Orakei is putting plans in place to develop former navy housing on Auckland’s North Shore.

As part of its treaty settlement, the hapū is buying 230 residential properties in Bayswater and Belmont, mostly 800 square metre sections with 1950s and 60s weatherboard houses on them.

Spokesperson Ngarimu Blair says that’s not the best use of the land, and the iwi would like to have the flexibility to create mixed diverse housing from standalone houses to townhouses and apartments.

That may need a change to Auckland’s Draft Unitary Plan.

The navy holds the lease on the properties until 2018.
