Brazilian jujitsu choice of wahine
An emerging star of Brazilian Jujitsu would like to see more Māori women take up the sport.
Kim Hancy, originally from Piopio, won gold in her division at the national championships over the weekend.
She says the sport is growing in popularity, especially as part of mixed martial arts.
One if its selling points is that it uses an opponent’s weight and momentum against them, so it allows women to go up against bigger opponents.
Hancy says there were a lot of young Māori men involved in the tournament, but not many women.
"Any women who have been involved in rugby or rugby league or even netball, who are used to a little bit of contact, I think they would love jujitsu. There are lots of Māori out there who are very athletic and strong and I would really encourage them to find out a little bit more about this amazing sport," she says.
