Tamanuhiri teams up with scientists
Tairawhiti iwi Ngāi Tamanuhiri its teaming up with a national centre of research excellence to develop its land and people.
A Memorandum of Understanding with Massey University’s Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Evolution and Ecology aims to help scientists more directly communicate their research findings and put them into action.
It will also help those scientists to gain a more practical understanding of how iwi approach ecological restoration and sustainable land and water management.
Ngāi Tamanuhiri general manager Richard Brooking says initial work has involved mapping the rohe to make sense of the topography and best use of the land, which has already led to high quality information being given to various management committees.
He says the iwi is also keen to create a biodiversity plan, similar to the plan for the Uawa River that the centre has created with neighbours Te Aitanga-ā-Hauiti.
