New dean has life of service
The new dean of the Māori section of St John’s Theological College says being raised with a kaupapa of service to one’s people led him to the priesthood.
Katene Eruera says he initially thought that service would come through his work as a lawyer, but he became drawn into the opportunities offered by the Anglican church.
In recent years he has worked as an air force chaplain and in locum ministries in Australia’s Northern Territory.
He says that’s part of God calling him to where he can help.
"Over time I have had a varied ministry, and a lot of it is about where I have been placed, where my bishops have come and asked me to help and also in the military recently, being a lot of our people are there, so that was a very good experience. I Australia I was in Alice Springs for a short time, but I am surprised how many Maori are in the middle of Australia and you always find there are our people somewhere who need our help," he says.
Katene Eruera takes up his new role on August 29.
