Māori nurses tackle underpayment
Māori nurses say there is a pay gap of up to 20 percent between nurses working for Māori health organisations and those working for other primary providers and district health boards.
Kerri Nuku, the new kaiwhakahaere of the New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation rūnanga, says that is undermining efforts to create a sustainable Māori nursing and health workforce.
She says such a workforce or Māori working in Māori communities is essential to address inequities in Māori health.
The rūnanga is running a pay parity campaign on the issue.
