Te Matau ā Maui to be restored
Hastings District Council is looking at giving Māori place names equal standing in its district plan.
That means Cape Kidnappers will also be known as Te Matau a Maui, and Ocean Beach Waipuka.
Māori landowners in the region have requested the change.
The plan review is also considering a request from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust to add additional wāhi tapū sites to the plan and to identify Cape Kidnappers as an historic area of international importance.
There were more than 200 recorded of Māori and early European archaeological sites in the cape area.
