Charter school hopefuls released

The Education Ministry has been forced to release the names of groups who expressed interest in running charter schools, after the Ombudsman ruled there was no good reason to keep the list hidden.
A third of the 36 organisations are Māori including an iwi, a marae and Ngāti Kahungunu Incorporated.
However, they didn’t make the shortlist to run a so called partnership school, which is believed to include Advanced Training Centre, the North Shore military-style prep school attended by the son of ACT leader John Banks.
NZEI national president Judith Nowotarski says the release of the names gives some transparency in an otherwise secretive process, and they should have been our months ago.
