Housing policy putting kiwis first
Labour is dismissing claims its policy of barring foreigners from buying existing homes is racist.
Critics are trying to paint the policy as anti-Asian, even though it applies to all non-residents except Australians.
Hauraki-Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta says Labour is putting the interests of ordinary working New Zealanders ahead of foreign speculators.
"So yep we’re expecting in parliament a lot of political flak around it, that it's racist and all of that, but the reality is that in Auckland especially, the demand and pressure on housing means it's harder for first home buyers to get into a place where they work, and I think that's a core expectation that you can have that in New Zealand," she says.
Ms Mahuta says other countries including Australia have similar policies.
