Kura look at assessment

Kura kaupapa Māori want to establish their own national quality control and assurance structure.
Ngā Kura ā Iwi ō Aotearoa Chair Pem Bird says it’s seen as the best way to ensure that achievement against Ngā Whanaketanga or national standards is reliable and consistent across the membership.
He says kura are confident they can take charge of every part of the teaching and learning process, from curriculum design to the planning and teaching of it through to the assessment and moderation of the national benchmark.
The association has started work developing a national writing exemplar to guide kura, with exemplars in oracy, maths and reading to follow.
Mr Bird says other recommendations coming out of Ngā Kura a Iwi’s annual hui at Torere Marae included suggestions for improvement in te reo Māori at NCEA level and expanding Māori medium initiatives.
