Help needed for Māori jobseekers
The chief executive of Business New Zealand, Phil O’Reilly, wants to see more done to employ Māori and Pacific Islanders.
Mr O’Reilly says there is a disconnect between the skills the education system is pumping out when it comes to students' skills and what business needs to grow.
He says there are ways to fill the gap, such as more job-based training and getting young people to make informed choices so their training is more relevant to what employers want.
He says by 2030 the majority of Auckland’s population will be of Māori, Pacific and Asian descent, so if Māori and Pacific people are not succeeding it will be bad for Auckland and other cities.
