Remove Your Shoes artist’s response
The Auckland Triennial is winding down, but there is still time to see some of the contemporary artworks around the city.
Wayne Youle from Ngapuhi collaborated with Black Panther Emory Douglas and Portugese artist Rigo 23 on a mural for the Fresh Gallery in Otara.
He was inspired by the triennial’s theme, If You Were to Live Here.
"I took it as someone from this land and especially Auckland, North Auckland and I thought ‘if you were to live here’ and I called my piece Remove Your Shoes. It commented on tikanga Māori and the respect of people’s place and people’s land and people’s homes and all those sorts of things which is a kind of universal thing," he says.
