Marae mooted for civil defence
Hauraki-Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta wants to see marae in her electorate assessed for their role in civil defence.
Ms Mahuta attended the opening at the weekend of a new wharekai at Hukanui Amuri Marae in Huntly, which is to be a new hub for employment and community activities under the Government’s Marae CBD pilot project.
She says the swarm of earthquakes which have hit Wellington and the top of the South Island over the weekend are a reminder for people to plan what to do in the case of natural disasters.
Marae in Waikato and Hauraki might become civil defence posts if Auckland was affected by a major disaster.
