Te Arawa service to be rewarded
Seven Te Arawa women working in health and social services have been selected to be honoured at the third Matariki Te Arawa Women’s Awards.
They are Taini Jameson, Grace Dorsett, Heeni Morehu, Phyllis Tangitu, Mala Grant, June Grant and Nancy Tait.
This year’s theme is Oranga Tangata, Oranga Whānau, which covers people supporting families dealing with violence, suicide, mental health and addictions, poverty, cancer support, health and wellbeing.
Because of the large number of nominations received, seven other wahine will also be acknowledged for their work at the awards ceremony on July 12 at Rotorua’s Blue Baths.
Selection is based on ‘kanohi kitea i te marae’… known faces at the marae both in front and behind the scenes, voluntary services in their fields, a dedication to maintaining and upholding Te Arawa tikanga and kawa, and a commitment to hapū and iwi.
The awards ceremony will include the Honour Matariki concert, featuring Betty-Anne Monga of Ardijah, Whirimako Black, Maisey Rika and Ria Hall.
