Ngāi Te Rangi nearing end of settlement journey
Tauranga Moana iwi Ngāi Te Rangi are a step closer to their treaty settlement, exchanging an agreement in principle with the Crown.
Negotiator Willie Te Aho says they hope to initial a deed of settlement next month.
He says the $30 million deal includes the opportunity to buy a number of schools as well as important cultural sites, including the islands Motuotau off Mount Maunganui beach and Karewa offshore from Matakana Island, a sanctuary for tuatara.
Ngāi Te Rangi and other Tauranga Moana iwi are also celebrating an agreement with Tauranga City Council to set up a joint board to manage Mauao.
The mountain at Mount Maunganui was vested to the iwi in 2007, but it has been administered by the council.
