Tangata whenua push to clean up Lake Horowhenua
Members of Muaupoko and Ngāti Pareraukawa have challenged the Horizons Regional Council to invest in a two-year-plan to clean up Lake Horowhenua.
Professor Whatarangi Winiata from the Lake Horowhenua and Hokio Stream Working Party says the dream is for people to be able to swim in the lake and stream without fear.
Thirty years of nutrient runoff from farming and market gardening and the discharge of treated sewage has made the lake one of the most polluted stretches of water in the country.
The restoration plan is expected to cost about $3 million.
