Rotorua expressway protest taken to council


Hundreds of people marched through Rotorua this morning the protest the proposed taking of Māori land to build a new route to Rotorua Airport.
The hikoi was timed to arrive at the Rotorua District Council building in time for the council's Te Arawa standing committee meeting.
Mayor Kevin Winters told the 300 marchers that the building of the Rotorua Eastern Arterial was a decision made by the New Zealand Transport Agency.
He encouraged them to keep up a dialogue with the agency.
Te Arawa hapū Ngāti Hurunga Te Rangi, Ngāti Te Roro ō Te Rangi and Ngāti Uenukukopako have placed three pouwhenua on tribal land along the proposed route to give a physical expression to their opposition.
