Private cadetship scheme to be extended

Global engineering company Aurecon is increasing the number of Ngāi Tahu cadets it takes on, and it is looking at extending the scheme to other iwi.
Australia-New Zealand manager Neil Barr says the cadetship programme, which aims to provide meaningful career opportunities for young Māori, has been extremely successful.
He says young people are one of New Zealand’s untapped natural resources.
The scheme is a partnership between the company, Ngāi Tahu and the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.
Ngāi Tahu Chair Sir Mark Solomon says the cadetship is another way for Ngāi Tahu to contribute to the Canterbury earthquake recovery and give its rangatahi the opportunity for meaningful careers in a professional field.
He says the programme came out of the strong relationship Aurecon had with Ngāi Tahu Property.
