Kapiti council appoints Māori reps
Kapiti Coast District Council has appointed Māori representatives to three of its standing committees.
Mayor Jenny Rowan says she believes tangata whenua are the council’s treaty partners and should be involved in the decision-making process.
The representatives, who have voting rights, were appointed in consultation with the council’s partnership advisory body, Te Whakaminenga ō Kapiti.
Caleb Royal, who sat on the resource management committee for the first time this week, says it was an historic moment and he is honoured to be representing the three iwi of the district on the committee.
The other appointees are Russell Spratt on the Corporate Business Committee and Rupene Waaka on the Environment and Community Development Committee.
