Volunteering a cultural mindset
Its Volunteer week and this year the unpaid contributions that Māori make top their communities are being noted.
The theme for the week is He Tangata, He Tangata, He Tangata.
Paul Eagle from Volunteering New Zealand says that’s a reminder that volunteering is all about people.
He says it’s not something that Māori often think about.
"It’s sort of not called that in our culture. Things just happen and our cultures, our ethnicities don't label things as volunteering. When we have to go and do things for the whānau or when we have whānau-based activity or are involved in organisations, it just gets done but we don't stop and say 'hey, we did some volunteering,'" Mr Eagle says.
