Manurewa cleared to remove mangroves
Manurewa Marae has won resource consent to clear mangroves from its access to the Manukau Harbour.
Chair Rangi McLean says the marae wants to clear two inlets so it can build up its waka ama activities.
They include Puhinui Creek, which runs beside the marae and Clendon, and Waimahia Creek, which flows through Weymouth and Wattle Downs.
Mr McLean says the marae will be meeting with Ngāti Te Ata, who have cleared mangroves to restore the beaches around Waiuku on the southern side of the harbour, and with the group that has cleared Pahurehure Inlet near Papakura.
Much of the work clearing the 19 hectares of mangroves will be done by periodic detention workers.
