Standardised training for Māori wardens
A new training package for Māori wardens will be rolled out next month.
Ngapera Hoerara, the Senior Strategy Advisor for Te Puni Kokiri’s Māori wardens project, says a review of training around the country found an inconsistent approach, with cadets taking from three months to three years to get up to warrant level.
Training has been broken into modules giving wardens the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely in their communities.
He says it is structured in such a way that it can lead to higher educational opportunities.
Wardens from each of the districts are being trained up so they can do the induction and training themselves.
