The Māori king has invited 150 guests to the Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development today for a Matariki dinner to celebrate the Kiingitanga and the beginning of the new year.
Spokesman, Rahui Papa, says King Tuheitia intends to make it an annual event.
Celebrations start with a ceremony in the afternoon to acknowledge the new sculpture in Ngaruawahia based on the moko worn by the first two Māori kings, Potatau and Tawhiao.
The dinner will hear from speakers including Professor Ranginui Walker and the South African High Commissioner, Mtombizodwa Msuthukazi Lallie.
